Here's some interesting facts about the History of London Buses.
In 1850 Thomas Tilling started horse bus services, and in 1855 the London
General Omnibus Company or LGOC was founded to amalgamate and regulate
the horse-drawn omnibus facilities then operating in London. The name
London General was replaced via London Transport, which became
synonymous along with the red London bus.
The Associated Equipment Company (AEC) was created as a subsidiary of
the LGOC in 1912 to create buses and additional equipment for its parent
company, and progressed in the ownership of LGOC and its successors
until 1962. In August 2008, the London Transport Commissioner Peter
Hendy announced that the withdrawal of the bendy buses would take place,
starting in 2009.
Most local buses within London form a network managed by London Buses,
an arm of Transport for London, although generally facilities are
operated by private sector companies under contract to London Buses.
Originally all the routes were distinguished via an N prefixed route
number and had their own (premium) fare structure, in part because the
routes are greatly extended from their daytime equivalents.
More recently, under the effect of the former Mayor of London, Ken
Livingstone, night buses have adopted standard London bus fares. Most of
these amenities are run by National Express and their European affiliate
Eurolines.
These operated at a premium fare (compared with the parallel
nevertheless slower London Buses services) nonetheless did not survive
the extension of the Docklands Light Railway to the airport in late
2005. From 2000 the flat fare was higher for journeys in Zone 1 than in
outer zones, even if from 2004 this difference was eliminated, the
variation coinciding together with the introduction of Oyster card flat
fares.
