Here's a little of London's History below to soothe your appetite before your next England Holiday:
The river Thames used to flow all the way through marshy lands and
was sprinkled together with small islands of sand and gravel filling the
spot with mosquitoes, as goes a saying that there were more mosquitoes
then people at that time.
The metropolis was exceptionally built by the Romans with wooden framed
timber buildings surrounding the Roman civic properties and soon it grew
rapidly as the troops realized its importance for raiding purposes. In
the next century it was in 886 that the Danish were ousted by Alfred the
Great and he made it a part of his Southern England kingdom.
By 12th century in 1123 St Bartholomew's Priory was founded, followed
quickly by other monasteries.
The local merchants supported Edward IV, who was ready to grab the throne in 1461 and he Knighted countless
numbers of them.
A self taught architect, Inigo Jones, did some of the topmost designed sites in London in 1631 like Convent Garden Piazza, the initial purpose-built square in the city, Banqueting Hall (White hall), Queen's Residence (Greenwich) and Queen's Chapel. Bazalgette was well held responsible for Embankment's design and the Battersea, Hammersmith and Albert Bridges.
More land of the Royal Stables was cleared to form Trafalgar Square and just two years later the up-to-the-minute National Gallery sprung up. The
Crystal Palace display was a considerable hit with thousands of inhabitants
and also visitors from all over the planet and after this event the Crystal Palace was shifted to Sydenham, in South London where it stayed till1936 when a fire burned it down.
After the World War 1 unemployment was rising and the labour unrest exploded in 1926 when all
the workforce gathered together for a General Strike which was so enormous that
London's municipal council had to call in the Army to get the major locomotives like the underground trains and buses running and to maintain law and order in the city.
Most parts of Europe were later seized by the Germans and they forced the English troops
to evacuate through Dunkirk in France and return to Britain in 1940.
After World War 2, Churchill was voted out and the new Labour Government nationalized countless industries like Electricity, gas, water and health and it took a long instant to stand up from the after effects of war.
Lately two Princes known as 'heir and the spare' are in line to the
throne and are followed by loads of crowds and media interested in their relationships
and the English Monarchy is still going strong in the 21st Century.
