Sightseeing London

It looks like a port existed at the start of the  Fleet River, used for trading and fishing. This trading grew immensely till the time, when the city was assaulted and annexed by the Vikings. It was essential for them to renovate the city to its original place. The Roman’s Londinium had its walls to  defend itself from the enemy coming from all sides.

Up to 886 AD, Vikings kept attacking near the rest of South East Britain. Finally Alfred the Great re captured London and signed a peace treaty of mutual understanding with the Danish chief, Guthrum. Then the basic Saxon city of Lundenwic was transferred by Ealdwic, the old city, currently spelt as Aldwych. Now this place is known as the City of Westminster. Ethelred’s troops celebrated victory in a rebound raid and pulled down the London Bridge along with its top, holding the Danish military HQs.

This re formed the English control. Canute arrived and had the English crown in 1017 AD, controlling the country up to 1042 AD. After he died, his stepson Edward the Confessor, a previous Saxon, claimed it once again. He re settled Westminster Abbey, close to the Palace of Westminster. By that time, London had grown into the most developing city of Britain. Winchester still had the official seat of government.
