Places To Shop in London

In the west End, the department stores are usually well-stocked with country casuals and waterproofs; some of the sports/mountaineering suppliers around Covent Garden also have surprisingly high-quality outerwear. For the Great British Sweater, look no further than
Marks & Spencer. Their lambswool is the cheapest in London, but the choice of styles and
colours is limited. Scottish Merchant at 16 New Row, WC2 has fascinating Scottish-made
sweaters of supreme quality (and great price).

The Scotch House in Knightsbridge is also very popular. The Irish Shop at 14 King Street
also has good knitwear, as well as the traditional Irish linen. The Mall Antiques Arcade at
359 Upper Street and the adjacent Camden Passage.   Bermondsey's early-morning Friday
antique market at Bermondsey Square, SEl  is a major trading event. The best items change
hands by l0am.

The Base, 55 Monmouth Street, WC2. Exclusive quality clothes for larger women.
High & Mighty, 83 Knightsbridge, SW1. Classic English clothes for the larger than average gentleman. Also sport and leisurewear. Long Tall Sally, 21-25 Chiltern Street, Wl  has
elegant clothes for tall women. Reasonable prices at Crispins on the opposite side of the road
caters for those with big feet. The Small and Tall Shoe Shop, 71 York Street, Wl  is for those customers with very short or long, narrow or wide feet.

More About London

London is home to five professional symphony orchestras. These include the London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia and BBC Symphony Orchestra. The highlight of each year is broadcasted by the BBC worldwide as the "Last Night of the Proms" at the Royal Albert Hall.

Concert halls are the Barbican Hall, Royal Festival Hall and St John's Church in Westminster. One of the most popular concert halls, the Wigmore Hall is behind Oxford Street. In June 2002, after extensive renovations in 1988 in part of today's financial district there was discovered a Roman amphitheater which was made available to the public.

In Trafalgar Square stands the church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. It was built in the years 1721 to 1726 according to plans by the architect James Gibbs. The church often hosts concerts, the orchestras that occur there include the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and the New Trinity Baroque ensemble from the U.S.. In the crypt, a café was set up, which sometimes have jazz groups performing. The parish is also home to one of the most famous church choirs in the world.

In the City of Westminster is the Abbey Road studios. The building in the same street was purchased in 1929 by EMI, the studios opened on 12  November 1931. In the opening ceremony, Sir Edward Elgar conducted the London Symphony Orchestra in Studio 1 and it led to the historical recording of Land of Hope and Glory. The Beatles were at the music studio recording the album "Abbey Road" (1969).

Pink Floyd, who in the 1970s recorded their albums in the studio, an were seen as the "house band" of the studio. Among others hits that came from here are "The Dark Side of the Moon." Since the 1980s the studio is a recording studio used for orchestral film scores. The first film music background was recorded here of Raiders of the Lost Ark, with music by John Williams. Also the music for The Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter films have been recorded here.

The O2 is an entertainment complex, which was formerly known as the Millennium Dome. Numerous well-known international artists have performed live at the O2 Arena with concert hall performances by Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and the Spice Girls.

Among the largest and most famous museums in the world is the British Museum which is in Bloomsbury. In it are over six million exhibits. Also famous here is the Reading Room, which is a circular reading room that Karl Marx studied in and also Mahatma Gandhi.
